The Unicode to Preeti Converter changes Nepali text written in Unicode (Devanagari) into Preeti font encoding. Many print shops, design tools, and older office systems in Nepal still expect text in the Preeti layout, so this tool bridges modern Unicode writing with those legacy workflows. Type or paste your Unicode text above and the Preeti version appears right away.
How to Use
- Type or paste your Nepali Unicode text into the Unicode Text box.
- The Preeti Text box fills in automatically as you type or paste.
- Use Copy to copy the result, Download to save it as a
.txtfile, or Clear to reset both boxes.
The conversion runs in your browser and updates as you go, so you can check the result before copying it anywhere.
What Is Preeti Font?
Preeti is a long-standing Nepali font that stores Devanagari characters using ordinary ASCII keyboard keys instead of standard Unicode. Because it is not Unicode, a Preeti document only displays as Nepali when the Preeti font is installed and selected in the program that opens it. Without the font, the same text shows as Roman-looking characters such as g]kfn.
This converter produces that Preeti-encoded text from your Unicode input. The text is correct even before the font is applied; you simply need Preeti installed in the destination app to see it as Nepali. If you would rather write directly in Unicode, the Nepali Unicode Typing tool helps you enter Devanagari text.
Unicode vs Preeti Font
Unicode and Preeti represent the same Nepali language in different ways.
- Unicode is the international standard. It works on every modern device and is the right choice for anything read on screens, shared online, or searched.
- Preeti is a legacy layout. It remains common in print, desktop publishing, and older Nepali software that has not moved to Unicode.
A practical rule is to write and edit in Unicode, then convert to Preeti only at the final step for a system that needs it. Keep your Unicode version as the master copy.
How the Conversion Works
The converter maps each Devanagari character to its Preeti key and fixes the ordering that plain character replacement gets wrong.
- Normalize line breaks so text from any source converts consistently.
- Reposition reph (र्). In Unicode, the half-form
र्often sits before its consonant cluster. Preeti expects it at the end, so the tool moves it into the correct position. - Reorder the i-matra (ि). The
िvowel sign is typed after the consonant in Unicode but must appear before it in Preeti, so the tool swaps the order. - Apply the character map. Longest matches are replaced first, so conjuncts like
क्ष,त्र, andज्ञare handled before their individual letters, and matras and digits map to their Preeti keys.
These three adjustments- reph, i-matra, and conjunct handling- are the steps that break basic converters, and they are built into this tool.
Example: Unicode to Preeti
A simple word shows how the mapping works:
| Unicode input | Preeti output |
|---|---|
| नमस्ते | gd:t] |
| नेपाल | g]kfn |
| १२३४५६७८९० | !@#$%^&*() |
Nepali digits map to the top-row numbers, and the danda । becomes a period. Paste any of these into the tool above to see the same result.
Supported Characters and Formats
The converter handles:
- Devanagari consonants, vowels, and matras (मात्रा).
- Conjuncts (जोडाक्षर) such as
क्ष,त्र,ज्ञ,क्त,क्र,द्द,द्ध, andश्र. - Nepali digits
०to९as)!@#$%^&*(. - The danda
।as., plusँ,ं,ः,ऽ, andॐ. - Automatic reph and i-matra reordering.
The output is plain Preeti-encoded text, ready to paste into any Preeti-based application.
Use Cases
- Preparing text for print shops and desktop publishing software that expects Preeti.
- Sending Nepali content to older office systems or databases built around the Preeti layout.
- Exporting Unicode writing into a Preeti file for a colleague or vendor who uses Preeti tooling.
Limitations
- Preeti font required to view. The output only appears as Nepali when the Preeti font is installed and selected in the destination app. The encoded text is still correct without it.
- Browser tool, not software. This is an online converter. It is not downloadable offline desktop software, though it runs locally in your browser once the page is open.
- One direction per page. This page converts Unicode to Preeti. To go the other way, use the Preeti to Unicode Converter.
