What is Nepali Unicode?
Nepali Unicode is text encoded using Unicode characters for the Devanagari writing system used by Nepali. Unlike older font-based systems such as Preeti and Kantipur, Unicode text doesn't depend on a particular legacy font to represent the characters.
This makes Unicode Nepali suitable for common digital tasks such as documents, email, messaging, social media, and web forms.
For example:
| Romanized input | Nepali Unicode |
|---|---|
namaste | नमस्ते |
nepal | नेपाल |
tapai | तपाई |
raamro | राम्रो |
kura | कुरा |
How Romanized Nepali typing works
The tool uses phonetic transliteration. It matches the English letters you type with Nepali Unicode characters and applies the longest matching token available in its mapping.
For example:
namaps to नmamaps to मaarepresents the long vowel आucan produce the vowel sign ु after a consonantT,D,N,Th,Dh, andShare used for specific retroflex sounds
The tool also has a dictionary for common words and names. Word suggestions can provide additional options when you're online.
The core transliteration runs in your browser using the bundled mapping, so basic conversion doesn't depend on an internet connection. Suggestions are an online enhancement and may not be available if the external suggestion service can't be reached.
Romanized typing guide
Basic vowels
| Input | Unicode |
a | अ |
aa | आ |
i | इ |
ii | ई |
u | उ |
uu | ऊ |
e | ए |
ai | ऐ |
o | ओ |
au | औ |
You can use doubled letters for long vowels, such as aa, ii, and uu.
For example, raamro produces राम्रो.
Consonants
Consonant input normally carries an inherent a sound.
| Input | Unicode |
ka | क |
kha | ख |
ga | ग |
gha | घ |
cha | च |
ja | ज |
ta | त |
da | द |
pa | प |
ba | ब |
ma | म |
ra | र |
la | ल |
sa | स |
ha | ह |
The consonant stem without the vowel can represent a halant form. The tool removes a trailing halant from the final output when appropriate.
Vowel signs and matras
After a consonant, vowel inputs can produce Nepali matras.
| Input pattern | Example |
ka | क |
kaa | का |
ki | कि |
kii | की |
ku | कु |
kuu | कू |
ke | के |
kai | कै |
ko | को |
kau | कौ |
For example, kura produces कुरा.
Retroflex letters
Use capital letters for the retroflex markers supported by the tool:
| Romanized input | Unicode |
T | ट |
Th | ठ |
D | ड |
Dh | ढ |
N | ण |
Sh | ष |
Capital markers matter because they distinguish these sounds from their regular counterparts.
Punctuation and symbols
The tool supports several Nepali punctuation and symbol mappings:
| Input | Output |
. | । |
.. | ॥ |
| | । |
|| | ॥ |
0 to 9 | ० to ९ |
Other standard ASCII punctuation can pass through unchanged.
The tool also supports common Unicode marks such as anusvara, chandrabindu, visarga, and halant through its defined input mappings.

After conversion, you can copy the Unicode text into places that support Unicode, including:
- Facebook and other social platforms

- Messaging apps
- Website forms
- Online applications
- Notes and other text fields
Because the output is Unicode text, you don't need to install a special legacy Nepali font just to display the converted characters.
Is Nepali Unicode typing translation?
No. This tool transliterates Romanized Nepali into Devanagari based on how the input is spelled or pronounced. It doesn't translate the meaning of an English sentence into Nepali.
For example, typing namaste produces नमस्ते because the tool converts the Romanized spelling into Nepali script. It doesn't translate an English word or sentence into its Nepali meaning.
If you need English-to-Nepali meaning translation, use a translation service instead.
What if a word converts incorrectly?
Romanized Nepali doesn't always have one fixed English-letter spelling. If a result isn't what you expect, try changing the spelling.
You can also:
- Check whether you need a long vowel such as
aa,ii, oruu. - Use the appropriate capital marker for retroflex letters such as
T,D, orN. - Try another phonetic spelling.
- Choose a suitable word suggestion when suggestions are available.
- Delete the converted word and type it again.
The built-in mapping covers standard Nepali phonetic spelling, but uncommon spellings may need adjustment.
Nepali Unicode typing vs Preeti
