For BS dates, the available Day options adjust to the selected Nepali month. This helps prevent invalid dates because Nepali months can have different lengths. If you leave a required field empty, the converter asks you to select the year, month, and day before continuing.

What Is Bikram Sambat (BS)?

Bikram Sambat (BS) is the calendar system commonly used for official and everyday date references in Nepal. BS dates appear in Nepali government, identity, education, financial, and everyday records, while many international forms and systems require Gregorian dates.

AD, or Anno Domini, refers to dates in the Gregorian calendar, which is widely used internationally.

The Nepali calendar has 12 months:

BS and AD use different calendar systems. Their years also begin on different dates, so an exact conversion requires the year, month, and day rather than a simple year subtraction.

How the Conversion Works

The converter uses a reference date together with the BS calendar's year-by-year month lengths.

The reference point is:

BS 2000 Baishakh 1 = AD 14 April 1943

For a BS to AD conversion, the tool calculates the number of days between the entered BS date and this reference date. It uses the calendar table to count the days in the relevant BS years and months, then applies that day offset to 14 April 1943.

For an AD to BS conversion, the process works in reverse. The converter finds the corresponding day offset and identifies the BS year, month, and day for that date.

The calendar table covers BS 2000 through BS 2099. The calculation uses whole-day arithmetic, so no rounding is involved.

Important Notes for Nepali Date Conversion

This converter supports BS 2000 to BS 2099. Dates outside this range aren't supported.

A common shortcut is to subtract 56 or 57 years from a BS year to estimate the corresponding AD year. This may provide a rough estimate, but it does not produce an exact date. Because the Nepali New Year begins in mid-April, a fixed subtraction can give the wrong month or day, especially near the transition between the BS and Gregorian calendar years. The month and day must also be considered.

For passports, visas, identification documents, applications, and official records, use the date converter instead of relying on a fixed year difference.

If a birth certificate, citizenship document, lalpurja, or other source record contains faded, handwritten, unclear, or conflicting information, resolve the ambiguity on the original document before converting it. The tool converts the date you enter, so an incorrect source date will produce an incorrect converted result.

For an official application, enter the converted date exactly as required by the receiving organization. If the organization has specific date-format or verification requirements, follow its instructions.
