What Is the Preeti Font?
Preeti is one of the oldest and most widely used Nepali fonts. It lets you type Devanagari on an English keyboard by assigning each Nepali letter to a specific key. For example, s produces क, k produces प, and g produces न. The font file draws the Devanagari shape at that key position.
The catch is that the underlying characters are still Latin keys. If the Preeti font is not installed, the same file displays as the raw keys, which look like random English letters and symbols. Unicode solves this by giving every Nepali character its own standard code point, so it renders correctly on any device without a special font.
How the Preeti to Unicode Conversion Works
The converter applies two steps:
- Key-to-character mapping. Each input character is replaced with its Unicode equivalent using the standard Preeti keyboard layout. Consonants, vowels, matras (vowel signs), digits, and punctuation all have a fixed mapping.
- Post-processing. Devanagari stores some marks in a different order than Preeti types them. The converter reorders the i-matra (ि) so it sits with the correct consonant, places the reph (र्) after its consonant, and assembles conjuncts such as क्ष, त्र, and ज्ञ. What to Paste (Supported Input)
Paste text that was actually typed in the Preeti font. The tool expects Preeti-encoded input and converts it to Unicode.
Do not paste text that is already Unicode, because it will be mapped again and come out wrong. Also avoid text from other legacy fonts such as Kantipur, since those use different key assignments and will not convert correctly here.

Limitations and Common Mistakes
- Wrong source font. If your text came from Kantipur, Sagarmatha, or another legacy font, the output will be incorrect. Convert from the original Preeti source.
- Already-Unicode text. Pasting Unicode back into the tool re-maps it and produces garbage.
- Complex conjuncts. Most clusters convert correctly, but review the result for unusual combinations and retype if something looks off.
- No file upload. This tool works with pasted text only. It does not import PDF, DOCX, or TXT files.
