A share calculator works out the real profit or loss on a NEPSE trade after every charge. You enter the quantity, the buy price and the sell price, and it returns the net amount that reaches your bank. Broker commission, the SEBON fee, the DP charge and capital gains tax all come out of your trade before you see the money. Most people price a trade from the buy and sell figures alone and miss these costs.

How to Use the Share Calculator

    1. Choose Buy Shares or Sell Shares. The tab you pick decides which fields you fill in.
    2. Enter the quantity in कित्ता and the price per share. For a sale, add the holding period and your original buy price, because the calculator needs them to work out your capital gains tax.
    3. Select the security type. Ordinary shares use the equity commission tiers; debentures and mutual funds use the lower bond and fund schedules.
    4. Keep Standard (SEBON rate) for broker commission, or switch to Custom rate and enter the percentage your broker actually charges. Set the DP charge to your broker's amount, Rs 25 by default.
    5. Click Calculate. The result shows your total investment for a buy, or your net amount credited and net profit for a sale, with every charge listed line by line. Copy or print the summary to keep a record.

The Real Cost of a Share Trade

When you trade shares on the Nepal Stock Exchange, four charges sit between the headline price and your final number. The calculator applies all four to every trade, on both the buy side and the sell side.

    • Broker commission. A percentage of the trade value, tiered by transaction size, with a minimum of Rs 10 per trade.
    • SEBON fee. A 0.015% regulatory fee on the equity transaction amount, charged on both buy and sell. Bonds and mutual funds pay a lower 0.01%.
    • DP charge. A flat Rs 25 per scrip per settlement day, paid to your depository participant.
    • Capital gains tax. A tax on your profit when you sell, at a rate set by how long you held the shares.

On the buy side these charges add to your cost. On the sell side they reduce your proceeds before tax applies. The calculator shows each line separately, so you can see where the money goes instead of trusting a single profit figure.

    NEPSE Broker Commission Tiers

SEBON sets the maximum broker commission for NEPSE trades. The rate depends on the total transaction value, and one tier applies to the whole amount. A larger trade falls into a lower rate, which is why combining small orders into one transaction saves money.

    Equity Shares

    Transaction ValueCommission Rate
Up to Rs 50,0000.36% (minimum Rs 10)
    Rs 50,001 to 5,00,0000.33%
    Rs 5,00,001 to 20,00,0000.31%
    Rs 20,00,001 to 1,00,00,0000.27%
    Above Rs 1,00,00,0000.24%

These tiers took effect under the SEBON directive of Jestha 2081 and apply to every listed equity trade. Your broker can charge less than these maximums, which is why the calculator accepts a custom rate.

    Bonds and Mutual Funds

Bonds and mutual fund units carry lower commission than equity. Bonds use 0.10% up to Rs 5,00,000, 0.05% up to Rs 50,00,000 and 0.02% above. Mutual funds use 0.15% up to Rs 5,00,000, 0.12% up to Rs 50,00,000 and 0.10% above. The calculator picks the right schedule when you select the security type.

Capital Gains Tax Rates for FY 2083/84

Capital gains tax applies only when you sell at a profit, and your broker deducts it at settlement. The Finance Act 2083/84 raised the rates from 17 July 2026. Most online calculators still show the old numbers, so check the effective date on any tool you use.

    Seller TypeHolding PeriodTax Rate
    Individual1 year or less10%
    IndividualMore than 1 year7.5%
    InstitutionalAny10%

The boundary is 365 days, counted from your purchase or allotment date to the sale date. Selling on day 365 pays the short-term rate. Selling on day 366 pays the long-term rate. On a gain of Rs 1,00,000, waiting one extra day saves Rs 2,500. The 7.5% rate on a one-year hold also keeps the final-tax treatment that the Finance Act 2083/84 confirmed for individual investors, so you do not file a separate return for listed share gains.

Worked Example: Buying 100 Shares, Selling at 600

Run this trade through the calculator to see the full chain. You buy 100 shares of a company at Rs 500 and sell them at Rs 600 after holding for more than a year.

    StepAmount
    Buy value (100 x Rs 500)Rs 50,000
    Buy broker commission (0.36%)Rs 180
    Buy SEBON fee (0.015%)Rs 7.50
    Buy DP chargeRs 25
    Total cost to buyRs 50,212.50
    Sell value (100 x Rs 600)Rs 60,000
    Sell broker commission (0.33%)Rs 198
    Sell SEBON fee (0.015%)Rs 9
    Sell DP chargeRs 25
    Net proceeds before taxRs 59,768
Taxable gain (proceeds minus cost)Rs 9,555.50
    Capital gains tax (7.5%)Rs 716.66
    Net profitRs 8,838.84
    Net amount creditedRs 59,051.34

The headline gap between buy and sell is Rs 10,000. The actual profit is Rs 8,838.84, because Rs 1,161.16 leaves your trade through fees and tax. Sell the same shares within a year and the tax rises to Rs 955.55, cutting your profit to Rs 8,599.95. The difference between the two holding periods is Rs 238.89 on this single trade.

Break-even Price and Your Real Margin

The break-even price is the sell price at which your net proceeds exactly match your total cost, including buy fees, sell fees and the DP charge on both sides. The calculator finds this number for you, and it is always above your buy price.

In the worked example, the break-even works out to Rs 504.11 per share against a buy price of Rs 500. You need the price to move up 0.82% just to cover your costs. Knowing that number before you buy tells you whether a small expected move can ever make you money, which matters more on low-priced or low-volatility stocks. The return percentage the calculator shows is your profit divided by your total invested amount, so it reflects what your money actually earned.

    Where This Calculator Meets Reality

The calculator gives you accurate numbers for straightforward cash trades, and a few edge cases need your attention. If you received bonus shares, your tax cost basis spreads across more units and your effective per-share cost falls, so enter the adjusted WACC shown in your MeroShare account. Right shares bought at face value change your average cost the same way. The calculator assumes one buy price for the whole quantity, while MeroShare tracks multiple purchase lots and applies the 365-day rule to each one. For mixed lots, enter the sell price you plan to use and check each lot's holding date separately.

DP charges vary by broker, and some brokers run discounts or promotional commission offers. The calculator lets you set the DP amount and switch it off, and it accepts a custom broker rate, so you can match your actual contract note. If your statement still differs by a few rupees, the gap comes from the rounding order your broker applies at settlement.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How is capital gains tax calculated on shares in Nepal?

Capital gains tax applies to your profit, not the sale amount. Take your net sale proceeds after sell-side fees, subtract your total buy cost including buy-side fees, and tax the remainder. Your broker deducts the tax at settlement for listed shares.

What is the capital gains tax rate on shares in Nepal?

Under the Finance Act 2083/84, effective 17 July 2026, an individual pays 10% on shares held one year or less and 7.5% on shares held longer. Institutional investors pay 10%.

How much is broker commission in Nepal?

Broker commission on equity ranges from 0.36% on trades up to Rs 50,000 down to 0.24% on trades above Rs 1 crore, with a minimum of Rs 10 per trade. The tier is chosen by your total transaction value.

What is DP charge in Nepal?

The DP charge is a flat Rs 25 per scrip per settlement day that your depository participant collects for updating the demat ownership record. It applies on both buying and selling in this calculator, and you can switch it off if your broker waives it.

What is the break-even price in NEPSE?

The break-even price is the sell price at which your net proceeds exactly cover your total cost including buy fees, sell fees and the DP charge on both sides. It is always higher than your buy price.

Do I pay capital gains tax if I sell shares at a loss?

No. Capital gains tax applies only when you sell at a profit. If your net result is a loss or zero, the tax line on your settlement is Rs 0. The final-tax treatment for listed shares has no portfolio-level settlement, so a net loss is not refunded or carried forward automatically; setting it off against future gains requires filing an annual return, and only against capital gains.

Is my WACC the average buy price?

Not quite. WACC, or weighted average cost, includes the broker commission, SEBON fee and DP charge you paid when buying, spread across your shares. Using the raw purchase price alone overstates your gain and makes you pay more tax than you owe.

Does this calculator work for bonds and mutual funds?

Yes. Select the security type and the calculator applies the lower bond or mutual fund commission tiers, the 0.01% SEBON fee and the same DP charge and capital gains tax logic.

Can I enter my broker's discounted commission rate?

Yes. Switch to custom rate and enter the percentage your broker charges you. This is useful when your broker offers a discount below the SEBON maximum tiers.
